Often AMI systems are treated as a siloed set of assets primarily geared toward billing and outage management systems.  Researchers at PNNL suggest that Smart Meters can be an essential component in implementing a grid sensing and measurement architecture that can provide real-time distribution data at a granular level – feeder, circuit, transformer (see Sensing and Measurement Architecture for Grid Modernization*). A recent court case resolves a potential legal obstacle to the widespread adoption of leveraging meters as large-scale sensor networks.
